The 2013 Multicultural Festival celebrated diversity and environmental awareness through the theme of “Inherit the Earth.” More than 400 people from around New Haven showed up for the festivities, which included a lively kids carnival, interactive booths set up by community partners, dancing, music, and, most importantly, food!
Art also had a prominent presence at this year’s festival. In tandem with the “Inherit the Earth” theme, NHS of New Haven and Start Community Bank asked local students to depict what “inheriting the earth” meant to them. An art show took place on the NHS campus commemorating those who brought the expression to life on paper.
We are already looking forward to next year’s festival! To view more photos from this event, check out Tom Ficklin's Photo Album.
Special thanks to the 2013 Multicultural Festival sponsors:
In April 2012, NHS collaborated with our neighbor Start Community Bank to sponsor the Multicultural Family Fun Fest in conjunction with National Minority Health and Financial Literacy Month. The event was held on Saturday, April 28 in the parking lots of NHS and Start Community Bank on both sides of Sherman Avenue. The event celebrated cultural diversity, women and youth, and featured art, traditional dancing, salsa, zumba, hip-hop, good food and more.
“Homeownership is a key component to building healthy communities,” said Bridgette Russell, Managing Director of NHS’ HomeOwnership Center. “Since sound fiscal practices are necessary for individuals to position themselves for homeownership, it is quite fitting that Start Community Bank was a collaborating partner in this wonderful outreach event.”
The goal of our 2010 and 2011 Multicultural Festivals was to expand NHS of New Haven’s client base and services within New Haven County, with an emphasis on homeownership opportunities for multicultural women. The Multicultural Festival was an opportunity to share ethnic food, clothes, dance, and music, and to serve as an introduction to a month long-series of bilingual classes for women designed and facilitated by women:
*Women Take The Lead: “Resident Leadership and Community Engagement" workshop
*Get Credit Cents!: “Building Great Credit and Reducing Debt”
*Tool School For Women: “Hands-on Workshop – Basic Home Repair”
*Open The Door To Homeownership: “Preparing to Buy”
