Moving a House

What does an organization like Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven do when a wonderful historic house is about to be demolished to make way for the development of a large apartment complex?  The answer, of course, is to attempt to devise a way to move the house to a site that would accommodate it.  Moving 400 Blake Street to 115 Valley Street in New Haven was not a project for the fainthearted!  Little did we know, for example, that the cost of disconnecting and reconnecting utility wires along the ½ mile route would exceed the cost of physically transporting the house!  When everything was completed, however, a wonderful home was preserved for the new homeowner.
