Fairlawn Manor
In August 2004, after several years of negotiations, Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven acquired the 12 houses at the intersection of Whalley Avenue, Blake Street, and E.T. Grasso Boulevard now known collectively as Fairlawn Manor. These 12 houses had been neglected and were ultimately abandoned by their previous owner—an investor from New York City. Each of the houses is being restored to historic standards and specifications, and is receiving complete lead and asbestos abatement.
Fairlawn Manor is being developed as mixed income development to promote and preserve economic diversity in the Blake Street area. It is also the cornerstone of our Revitalization Demonstration Project. The impact of the restoration of these houses has been significant, since all traffic entering New Haven on Whalley Avenue passes right by Fairlawn Manor. NHS is working closely with the new homeowners to establish a sense of community. We are sponsoring pot luck dinners, informal get-togethers, and community participation events such as tree planting and block clean-ups in support of our rehabilitation work. We expect that these homes will be occupied by their original owners for many years to come.
