Home Improvement and Energy Conservation Laboratory
Coming in April 2008! NHS of New Haven is currently developing a state-of-the-art Home Improvement and Energy Conservation Laboratory that will serve as a green demonstration model. It will be constructed as an energy-efficient structure, and we are pursuing LEED certification on the building. In addition, energy conservation techniques will be taught to our clients through the demonstration exhibits. With more accessible mortgages and rising energy costs, the classes to be held in the Lab are critically important to enable homebuyers, homeowners, and tenants to save money on simple home maintenance and energy conservation activities and to be successful in their housing experiences. The Lab will also incorporate an “Identifying Home Health Hazards” component into each of our classes. The Health Hazards program is designed to address the myriad of preventable health risks that are present in the home. The Lab will be the first of its kind in Connecticut, and NHS of New Haven will be the first affordable housing producer in New England to develop a green Home Improvement and Energy Conservation Laboratory. We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a Challenge Grant from the Kresge Foundation to support the construction and development of the Lab.
