Mission and Impact

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven was incorporated in 1979 as a nonprofit organization that positions New Haven’s neighborhoods to succeed by increasing homeownership; making homes functional, beautiful and affordable; and helping residents take charge of their neighborhoods.  We believe that increased owner-occupancy rates, educated homebuyers, and rehabilitated houses will produce stable, revitalized neighborhoods that our clients will be proud to call home.

NHS and its subsidiary, the New Haven HomeOwnership Center, have accomplished the following through June 30, 2007:

  • Developed 373 units of affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families (including both new construction and complete rehabilitation).
  • Created homeownership opportunities for 210 low- and moderate-income first-time homebuyers.
  • Helped 475 other prospective homebuyers actually purchase a home.
  • Created (or assisted with the creation of) six block watches or neighborhood associations.
  • Responded to basic inquiries from more than 8,500 clients expressing an interest in homeownership.
  • Provided pre-purchase homebuyer education to more than 1,000 prospective homebuyers.
  • Enrolled 693 participants in an IDA program in partnership with Empower New Haven.

Since its inception in 1979, NHS of New Haven has emerged as a premiere provider of affordable and sustainable homeownership opportunities and homebuyer education in the Greater New Haven area, and a champion of neighborhood revitalization throughout the region.
